Even before the earthquake, Haiti was well-known as the poorest country in the hemisphere. Yet, something very hopeful was happening there. More and more children were surviving their early days and years. I think its time to bring hope to more families around the globe.
Last year, President Obama stood before the UN and pledged to the world that the U.S. will support the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and approach next year's summit with a global plan to fight world poverty. If these goals are achieved, world poverty will be cut by half, tens of millions of lives will be saved, and billions more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the global economy. The MDGs are eight poverty-fighting goals -- agreed to by more than 180 countries -- that fight corruption, create new jobs, empower women and increase smart investments to beat poverty and disease.
I pray Obama keeps his promise and follows through his words and takes the lead on achieving the Millennium Development Goals by their 2015 deadline.
